Is my OB-GYN offering quality care?

OB-GYNs are there to assist women with common health issues during every stage of their lives. That’s why it’s so important to choose a doctor that continually offers quality care. Poor care is frustrating, but it can also lead to a missed diagnosis or a lack of follow-up, both of which can greatly harm a patient. That’s why Prevention recommends looking for the following signs, which should trigger a search for a new doctor as soon as possible.

Second opinions are sometimes necessary. This is especially true after receiving a serious diagnosis which could greatly impact your health and well-being. Good doctors encourage their patients to seek out all the information they need to remain informed about their care. If a doctor discourages you from getting another opinion, he or she is prioritizing being right over your health. Do what you feel is right, especially if you have questions about a treatment or procedure.

Exams with an OB-GYN are often uncomfortable for many women, so OB-GYNs must take pains to explain processes and prepare a patient for any discomfort she might experience. If your doctor dismisses your discomfort or implies you’re overreacting, it can be difficult to raise other concerns or make your voice heard. Compassion is an important trait in the health care field, and a lack of compassion directly impacts the quality of your care.

Communication is also important. For instance, your OB-GYN should have processes in place for providing test results and other information to patients. If you must call over and over or your messages aren’t responded to in a timely manner, it’s beyond frustrating. It also indicates a doctor that is either careless or forgetful, which is never a good sign.
