5 Common Holiday Accidents and How to Avoid Them

On Behalf of | Dec 4, 2017 | Personal Injury

The holiday season is just around the corner and that means Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas presents and accidents? Whether you’re stringing lights or hanging wreaths, there are several hazards lurking in what should be a joyous time.

These are 5 common accidents and injuries during the holidays:

1. Car Accidents

During the holidays, there are more cars on the roads than any other time of the year. Combined with terrible weather conditions (snow, ice and rain) and alcohol consumption and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. Avoid driving under the influence, speeding on slippery roads and always keep water, food and a first aid kit in your car in case you’re stranded after an accident.

2. Falling While Decorating

According to the CDC, nearly 6000 people are treated each year for fall-related injuries associated with holiday decorations. The majority of these falls happen by ladder, although stairs, rooftops and porches also play a role. To avoid falling, always make sure you are stepping on stable surface. If you feel unsafe, don’t risk it. If you can, get someone to hold the ladder while you put the angel on the tree or the lights on the house.

3. Electric Shock from Decorating

Exposed wires or a faulty socket can result in cardiac arrest, thermal burns, and muscle, nerve, and tissue destruction. Avoid electric shock when decorating by using authentic extension cords and never overloading an electrical socket. Also, never touch electrical wiring when you are wet.

4. Back Injury from Carrying Luggage

During the holidays, everyone travels, but if you pack heavy you might just injure your back. More than 72,900 travelers experienced luggage-related injuries in 2014 and most of them happened during the holiday season. Get the right luggage, pack lightly and make sure to lift with your knees…not your back.

5. Cuts from Opening Presents

You may be excited to open a gift, but you probably aren’t too keen on going to the ER right after. Packaging-related injuries are quite common, but you can avoid them by being patient and avoid using a sharp object to open your gifts.
