A medical malpractice case in which a 64-year-old woman died following what her lawyers called a routine procedure was settled this past January for $3 million.

The woman passes away in September 2009 only two days after undergoing surgery at DeKalb Medical Center. The woman, a Monroe resident, had surgery to excise an ovarian cyst, but during the operation her bowel was pierced, according to her lawyers. It was claimed the surgeon did not adequately inspect the patient’s bowel for cuts, then mishandled her complaints after the surgery.
Jurors after the case settled related that while they felt the doctor performed the surgery according to proper procedure, they believed the doctor should have informed the patient and her husband to come to the ER more quickly after she started belching following her surgery.
The surviving spouse of the deceased will be awarded the verdict.
